Sanna Nyassi Scores Twice, Leading Seattle Sounders to U.S. Open Cup

It's been a very good few days for Sanna Nyassi.

Last Friday he was called up by the Gambian national team for an Oct. 9 African Nations Cup qualifier. Saturday he helped his Seattle Sounders establish firm MLS playoff position with the winning goal in a critical 3-2 win over Toronto FC. Then on Tuesday he made American soccer history, scoring both goals as the Sounders claimed their second straight U.S. Open Cup title with a 2-1 triumph over the Columbus Crew.

Seattle became the first MLS team to repeat as winners of U.S. Soccer's all-comers tournament and the first from any league to do so since the amateur New York Pancyprian Freedoms won their second straight Open Cup in 1983. A record 31,311 fans attended Tuesday's final at Qwest Field, where Nyassi followed up on Saturday's goal (his first in MLS), with the first Open Cup final brace since pro clubs began entering the tournament in 1995.
