Football fans almost always love the backup quarterback. He's the imagined antidote for whatever ails your starter, and a sure path to victory if only the stupid coach would put him in. Usually reality isn't so kind, but sport has always been a different kind of reality -- part imagination, part cold, hard results; always fascinating. For Connecticut, the short-lived experiment with backup quarterback Cody Endres (right) -- who started several games in 2008 and 2009 -- seemed to be on the unlikely path to success. We say short lived because news broke on Wednesday that Endres would be suspended the rest of the 2010-2011 academic year for violating the school's substance abuse policy.
In the Huskies' fourth game of the season, incumbent Zach Frazer tossed an interception just before halftime after leading but a single touchdown drive. The ineffective senior was given the hook and out trotted Endres. Fresh off a previous suspension, Endres rallied the Huskies to a 24-point blitz in a little over a half of work.
He would start the next two games, directing the offense to 21- and 17-point efforts. Endres was solid, if unspectacular, but arguably better than the work of his predecessor.
