Cockfights Rule Roost in Puerto Rico

Filed under:

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - It is part of this island's culture.

The ancient sport of cockfighting is a tradition dating from Spain's colonization of the island more than five centuries ago.

Animal rights activists and animal lovers will certainly cringe and call it barbaric, but cockfighting is considered a noble, gentlemen's sport by enthusiasts - and there seemed to be plenty of them by the large, boisterous turnout at Club Gallistico de Puerto Rico Saturday night.

A quick history lesson.

Cockfighting has been legal here since 1933. Louisiana was the last U.S. state to allow the sport, but its ban took effect in August 2008.

The specially bred birds, known as gamecocks, are placed in an enclosure to fight for the primary purposes of gambling and entertainment. The best feathered fighters are bred from prized bloodlines to ensure power, speed and a brawling instinct and fed the finest feed. It is their natural instinct to fight
