Every now and then in one of our courts of law, a motion is made for a non obstante veredicto, or judgment notwithstanding the verdict. It asks a judge to reverse a jury's decision because the decision was contrary to the law, or without basis.
Sometimes the root of such a request is simply that the jury refused to follow the judge's instructions.
In the unlikelihood that Cam Newton doesn't win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday evening, he should request a non obstante veredicto from the Heisman Trust that oversees awarding the preeminent post-season college football award. For the only way Newton could depart New York City empty handed would be if enough jurors -- those who vote for the Heisman -- ignore the judges' ruling that he is eligible to play college football this season.
There is no question, of course, that Newton was the best college football player in this country this past regular season after guaranteeing that Auburn plays in the BCS national championship game next month by leading it to an undefeated record in the toughest conference in the land, the SEC. His Thursday night sweep of the Maxwell and Davey O'Brien awards at the Home Depot College Football Awards in Orlando all but cemented what should be his unrivaled candidacy for the Heisman.
