It's just not likely to be this season for the defenseman who is currently in the final year of a four-year contract that pays him over $5.7 million per season.
He's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after this season, along with fellow Montreal defensemen Roman Hamrlik and Hal Gill. When healthy, he's the Canadiens top defenseman and power play quarterback, averaging over 45 points per season over the past five years. Obviously, it's a big loss for Montreal which has alternated wins and losses since he went down against the Hurricanes. Markov injured the same knee during last year's playoffs which had him sidelined for the first month of this season.
