Jon Embree has been named the new football coach at the University of Colorado. The announcement was made Monday in Boulder, Colo. by athletic director Mike Bohn.Embree was an all-conference tight end for the Buffaloes during the 1980s, and beat out other members of the Colorado family like former standout running back Eric Bienemy and interim head coach Brian Cabral -- both of whom are going to serve as members of Embree's staff. Cabral took over for Dan Hawkins to lead Colorado to a 2-1 record to close the disappointing season, but will now take a step back to remain with the Buffs.
"It's a family affair and we didn't want to provide any type of erosion of that family affair," said Bohn. "That was something we really worked hard at. We want to ensure we do everything we can to rally, because that is the most important thing for us to do. We've got to unite behind this coach, this staff and this program, and that's going to allow us to be successful quicker than many people think we can be."
Embree has signed a five-year contract reportedly worth around $1 million per season, not including incentives. He was the tight ends coach for the Washington Redskins, but left that job following their loss to the New York Giants Sunday to accept the CU job.
Hawkins went just 19-39 during his four-plus years with Colorado.
Colorado will leave the BIg 12 and join the Pac-10 next season -- which will be called the Pac-12 by that time -- along with Utah.
