The Rangers are preparing to make their first official offer to Cliff Lee as they attempt to keep the free-agent lefty from heading to the Yankees. The New York Post reported Wednesday that the Rangers are "on the verge" of an official offer to Lee, perhaps a deal that runs as long as five years. The Rangers believe the Yankees already have offered Lee five or six years, likely at about $23 million per year, according to the report.
Lee's agent, Darek Braunecker, acknowledged to the Post that he is "starting to move stuff along" in the negotiating process but wouldn't confirm or deny any knowledge of a potential Rangers offer.
No one expects Texas to be able to match the Yankees dollar-for-dollar in their ultimate proposal. The Rangers are banking on their proximity to Lee's home in Arkansas and Texas' lack of a state income tax to fill in the gap between the actual dollars in the two proposals.
