Two for the Money: Cummings and Casey Lead Colorado's Charge

mls playoffs colorado rapids cummings caseyWatching the Colorado Rapids play this season, a connoisseur of the global game will have noticed a particular staple of the sport that has faded from prominence in recent years. A throwback tactic from a bygone era: the strike partnership.

In the age of million-dollar/pound/euro contracts and lucrative sponsorship deals, soccer's focus has moved away from the team and toward the individual.

You don't hear about Real Madrid. You hear about Cristiano Ronaldo. You don't hear about Manchester United. You hear about Wayne Rooney.

This recent trend has manifested itself tactically on the field. Many teams, especially in Europe, have moved away from a comprehensive attacking system and rely instead on funneling all their offense through one big-money player.

Barcelona does this with Lionel Messi, for example. Liverpool with Francisco Torres. Chelsea with Didier Drogba.
