MLS handed out the latest in its protracted string of end--of-season awards on Friday, honoring Real Salt Lake's imposing Jamison Olave as the 2010 defender of the year. The announcement should come as no surprise to anyone who's followed Salt Lake's stellar defensive effort this year, or anyone who simply takes a look at the MLS standings.
RSL conceded just twenty goals during the regular season, six better than its closest rival (the Los Angeles Galaxy yielded 26) and a league record. The team never allowed more than two goals in a single match.
Olave (photo, right) is a hugely important piece of RSL's nearly unsolvable defensive puzzle. At 6-2, 210 pounds, he looks like he belongs on a rugby field instead of a soccer pitch. He is, to say the least, an intimidating figure.
