Struggling U.S. national team forward Jozy Altidore scored his first competitive goal for Villarreal in nearly two years in a Copa del Rey match on Wednesday. Sure, it was against a third-division team. But for a player desperate for confidence and a foothold at a top club, any goal is golden. His outstanding 44th-minute strike staked the Yellow Submarine to a 1-0 lead over Polideportivo Ejido (which boasts one of the worst logos we've ever seen.).
The fairy tale was not to be, however. The minor league hosts equalized in the 90th minute. The return leg of the round-of-32 match-up is Nov. 9 in Villarreal.
Altidore's first and only goal for the Spanish club prior to Wednesday came in November 2008 in the final minute of a La Liga game against Athletic Bilbao.
His pro career has hit the skids since then. He was loaned to England's Hull City and struggled as the club was relegated from the Premier League last spring. He managed just one goal.
