The beauty of the Baseball Writers' Association of America's individual awards, a fellow scribe told me in September, is that someone gets hurt.No, he's not a sadist.
He was simply pointing out that when you cast a vote, it's often awfully hard to make everyone happy. It makes for an agonizing few weeks of deliberation, but it's also an honor. When worthy players get snubbed -- when a player has Jason Heyward's rookie campaign and loses out -- because another player was equally deserving, you know you're participating in something special.
It didn't take long to have that lesson driven home. This was my first season as a member of the BBWAA, and my first award vote -- for NL Rookie of the Year -- was a doozy. By the time my colleague and I were running through the eight awards a few months ago, Atlanta's Heyward and Giants catcher Buster Posey had separated themselves from a dazzling crop of National League rookies, but there was little distinction between the two of them at the top.
