Palm Reading: BCS Analyst Says Only One Non-AQ Gets Into BCS

Last season, Boise State and TCU did something no other pair of non-automatic qualifying teams have ever done -- they played in a BCS game.

Granted, that game was against each other, but it still was a monumental achievement for the non-AQs and a signal that the line of distinction between AQ and non-AQ was steadily being blurred.

Nearly a year later, Boise State and TCU find themselves in similar positions, jockeying for posting in the BCS rankings and the automatic berth, and staying undefeated and attractive for a possible at-large selection.

However, this year, the non-AQs might not get as lucky as they did a year ago. Even if both stay undefeated for the second consecutive regular season, BCS analyst Jerry Palm thinks one team could be on the outside looking in.

"I think one of them getting left out of the BCS altogether could easily happen; I think it could likely happen," said Palm, who doesn't control one of the six computers that make up the BCS computer rankings, but is one of the foremost authorities on the BCS through his website collegebcs.com.

"And that would be in favor of just about anybody. The bowls that would have to choose the other one, because one would automatically qualify, are the Sugar and the Orange, and TCU and Boise aren't going to be all that attractive to the Sugar and the Orange. They'd probably rather have an SEC team or a Big Ten team or a Big 12 team. Especially the Orange, which needs to fill their stadium. The Sugar won't have as big an issue with that, but the Sugar's already had three lousy draws for opponents the last three years. So, they're probably not going there again with the first choice if they don't have to."
