Trailing by one point in overtime and lining up for the game-tying extra point, Iowa State coach Paul Rhoades decided to roll the dice. The Cyclones faked it and went for a two-point conversion instead, which would have been good for the upset victory. Instead, Nebraska intercepted the pass and held on for the 31-30 win.
Iowa State led 10-7 at halftime, but Nebraska stormed out of the gate in the second half, opening up a 24-10 lead by the end of the third quarter. Iowa State refused to go quietly, however, and scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
The No. 9 Cornhuskers were paced offensively by a two-headed monster in the running game. Roy Helu, Jr. carried the ball 22 times for 99 yards and a score, but he was outpaced by teammate Rex Burkhead. The sophomore set career highs with 20 carries, 129 yards and two touchdowns.
Burkhead's 19-yard touchdown run was followed by a crucial extra point in overtime before Iowa State answered with an Austen Arnaud-to-Jake Williams touchdown pass -- which was followed with the game-ending fake.
Arnaud threw for 203 yards and three touchdowns, but was picked off twice. Alexander Robinson ran the ball 32 times for 108 yards for the Cyclones.
Iowa State (5-5, 3-3 in Big 12) will head to Colorado next week before closing with No. 14 Missouri.
Nebraska (8-1, 4-1) will host Kansas before traveling to Texas Tech and then closes with Colorado at home.
