The junior quarterback and Heisman Trophy front-runner played amid plenty of allegations and questions concerning his eligibility, but dismantled the Georgia Bulldogs Saturday, 49-31.
Newton carried the ball 30 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns. He completed 12 of his 15 pass attempts for 147 yards and two touchdowns.
Georgia gave the No. 2 Tigers quite a scare for a bit. On the strength of a Newton interception and star wideout A.J. Green, the Bulldogs built a 21-7 lead after one quarter. Auburn battled back to tie the game at halftime and then held a small lead, 35-31, heading into the fourth quarter.
Green finished the game with nine catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray threw for 273 yards and three touchdowns. He just couldn't keep up with Newton and the Tigers.
Newton didn't go at it alone, either. Onterio McCalebb carried the ball 12 times for 73 yards and scored three touchdowns. Philip Lutzenkirchen hauled in two touchdown catches -- both at pivotal moments of game. Michael Dyer carried the ball 13 times for 61 yards. The defense held Georgia to just 10 points in the final three quarters.
The conclusion of the game was marred by a brief fracas between the teams with less than two minutes remaining. Michael Goggans of Auburn was ejected for throwing a punch. Just a few plays later, Mike Blanc was ejected as well for the Tigers.
Auburn (11-0, 7-0) will face Alabama in the Iron Bowl on Nov. 26. The Tigers are the SEC West champs, so they'll have a game following that in the SEC championship. Wins in both games will surely put them in the BCS Championship.
Georgia (5-6, 3-5) has a home game against Georgia Tech remaining on Nov. 27.
