The Diamondbacks are trying to cut down on strikeouts this year after setting a major league record with 1,529 last season.Signing Russell Branyan might not help Arizona in that quest, but the D'backs will take the positives the well-traveled veteran usually provides along with his share of strikeouts.
Branyan signed a minor league deal Wednesday, according to multiple reports, and could be the favorite to replace Adam LaRoche at first base.
Since 2006 alone, Branyan has played for the Rays, Padres, Phillies, Cardinals, Brewers, Mariners and Indians. He split 2010 between Cleveland and Seattle, hitting 25 homers and posting an .810 OPS (while striking out 131 times) in 109 games.
It was only the fourth time in 13 major league seasons he appeared in at least 100 games, as back injuries and other ailments have been an issue for him at various points.
