Oshiomogho Atogwe Could Fill Need for Redskins at Safety

Oshiomogho Atogwe On President's Day 1999, then-Washington Redskins general manager Charley Casserly pulled off one of the greatest pivots in NFL history, losing starting quarterback Trent Green as a free agent to the St. Louis Rams only to replace him hours later by trading with the Minnesota Vikings for quarterback Brad Johnson.

Green had played well for the Redskins in 1998, his first as a starter, and would go on to have a fine career, mostly with the Kansas City Chiefs. But Johnson -- who would win the Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002 -- passed for more than 4,000 yards during his Redskins debut season while leading them to their only NFC East title during the last 19 years.

if, as is being reported by ESPN 101 in St. Louis, Rams safety Oshiomogho Atogwe is visiting Redskins Park this President's Day, the move doesn't figure to have the kind of major ramification of the Johnson for Green switch. However, Washington fans should know Atogwe's name because he's the player who returned the unfortunate fumble by Redskins guard Pete Kendall 75 yards for the touchdown that gave the Rams the 9-7 upset at FedEx Field in 2008.

The 29-year-old Atogwe, whom the Rams released on Feb. 18 to avoid paying him an $8 million roster bonus, isn't appealing just for that heads-up play. He started for three seasons in St. Louis under Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett including 2007 when he intercepted a career-high eight passes.
