Every Super Bowl broadcast has its memorable moments, from the commercials to the slow-motion replays of the action on the field. Lost in the excitement are the voices that guide the viewers over four crazy hours.Super Bowl XLV had plenty of appealing story lines and pivotal plays in need of description and analysis, and the FOX broadcast team of Troy Aikman and Joe Buck were very much up to the task. They had to be in a game that had more ups and downs than a roller-coaster ride.
Among the toughest tests for a play-by-play announcer and his color analyst is when a game with as much build-up as this particular Super Bowl gets out of hand early. After Nick Collins returned a Ben Roethlisberger interception 37 yards for a touchdown late in the first quarter to give the Packer a 14-0 lead, a blowout looked to be in the works. But Aikman and Buck kept their cool and reminded those watching at home how resilient the Steelers are.
For the second straight year, the benefit of having a Super Bowl-winning quarterback in the booth proved to be beneficial as Aikman was able to take us inside the helmets of Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers. Phil Simms fulfilled that role last year in Miami as Peyton Manning and Drew Brees went toe-to-toe, and Aikman was very insightful.
With the game on the line in the closing minute, both Aikman and Buck handled themselves well in calling that fourth-down pass from Roethlisberger to Wallace. Watching it live it looked like there could have been pass interference called on Green Bay's Tramon Williams, but after initially claiming Wallace had a case for a flag, Aikman and Buck to their credit looked at the replay and changed their minds. They both said it was a good non-call.
Overall, the two had a very smooth broadcast, choosing the right times to stay quiet and let the action on the field speak for itself while also providing strong commentary. Aikman was quick to point out as soon as the Packers stretched the lead to 31-25 with just over two minutes remaining that Roethlisberger had been in this position before, and Buck followed up by citing Super Bowl XLIII when Roethlisberger won it with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes in the final minute.
