Shaun Suisham Completes Circle With Super Bowl Appearance for Steelers

DALLAS -- It's almost as if karma has brought Shaun Suisham to Super Bowl XLV.

Signed as a rookie free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2005, Suisham spent part of that season as well as 2006 and 2009 with the Dallas Cowboys. In between, Suisham kicked for the Washington Redskins for three years before a missed 39-yard field goal attempt during a 7-6 defeat at Cowboys Stadium helped cause his ouster after an errant 23-yarder two weeks later. He was given the boot even though his 80.2 percent career accuracy was a franchise record.

On Sunday in that same stadium, Suisham will kick for the AFC champion Steelers as they take on the NFC champion Green Bay Packers for the title.

"I certainly didn't have the foresight to think that was a good thing," Suisham said of losing his seemingly secure job with the Redskins in December 2009. "But when I look back on it, it's awesome how things have worked out. It brought me here to Pittsburgh and I have a chance to kick in the Super Bowl. This is a neat place, but it doesn't matter that it's Dallas versus anyplace else. I'm in the Super Bowl and that's pretty cool in itself."

The 29-year-old Suisham, who was cut by the Cleveland Browns before the season, has been pretty awesome since joining the Steelers on Nov. 16, replacing 9-year Pittsburgh veteran Jeff Reed. Suisham was 14 of 15 down the stretch, missing only a 41-yarder during a blowout of the Carolina Panthers. He did miss a 43-yarder in the divisional round victory over the Baltimore Ravens but nailed two shorter kicks during the AFC playoffs
