The Twins and Carl Pavano are "making solid progress" toward a new contract, a major league source confirmed to FanHouse. In addition, a source told FanHouse's Steve Phillips the two sides had discussions throughout the day Thursday, with the Twins upping their offer to two years.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports first reported that the sides were closing in on a two-year deal.
Pavano, who turns 35 on Saturday, is the top remaining pitcher on the free-agent market. Since going to Minnesota in August 2009, Pavano has gone 22-15 with a 3.97 ERA.
Most had expected Pavano to return to Minnesota, where he was a solid No. 2 starter behind Francisco Liriano in 2010. The Nationals, Pirates and Royals also reportedly had some degree of interest in the right-hander.
