Johnny Cueto, Reds Reportedly Agree to Four-Year Contract Extension

Johnny CuetoThe Reds continue to lock up the core of their 2010 playoff team for the long haul, with Johnny Cueto apparently the latest to receive a lucrative multiyear deal.

Cueto has agreed to a four-year, $27 million contract, pending a physical, according to an ESPN Deportes report. The Reds told the Cincinnati Enquirer the deal is not done.

"We're working on a multiyear deal," said general manager Walt Jocketty. "A number of things have to be worked out."

The right-hander is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter and Tuesday requested a $3.9 million salary for 2011. The Reds countered at $3 million. A four-year deal would cover all of Cueto's arbitration-eligible seasons and buy out his first year of free agency.

Cincinnati last week signed reigning National League MVP Joey Votto to a three-year, $38 million deal that covers all of his arbitration years. In December, outfielder Jay Bruce agreed to a six-year, $51 million contract a week after veteran pitcher Bronson Arroyo got a three-year, $35 million extension.
