Mike Smith Contract Extension Likely in the Works

Soon, the Atlanta Falcons should be having earnest discussions on a contract extension for coach Mike Smith. He signed a four-year deal worth $2.2 million a season and he has completed three years and taken the Falcons to the playoffs twice.

That's not the half of it.

Before Smith arrived the organization had never had back-to-back winning seasons. He helped clear the debris from two failed regimes, Jim Mora's and Bobby Petrino.

Smith was the architect, along with GM Thomas Dimitrofff, of a button-downed, professional organization that had been missing from the Falcons for years.

The Falcons just finished with a 13-3 record and won the NFC South. This business of labor strife is probably holding up any deal for Smith, but once there is a CBA in place -- we think -- an extension for Smith should be the first order of business.

The Falcons are certainly not going to wait to get a deal in place and they might not even wait for the CBA.

So where Smith expects to land salary-wise is not certain, but neither side is going to hold each other up. Smith acts as his own agent and owner Arthur Blank can be a generous owner.

The highest paid NFL coach is Bill Belichick of the Patriots at $7.5 million, according to Forbes.

Mike Shanahan of the Redskins has a $7 million a year salary, but he also has Super Bowl championships on his resume.

Pete Carroll of the Seahawks comes in at $7 million, which was a goofy amount to pay Carroll.

Jeff Fisher of the Titans makes $5.75 million, which is a bargain considering what he has done in Tennessee.
