Vince Young Gone in Tennessee, But Restless Times Remain

Filed under:

Vince YoungBased on the twisting turn of events in the last few hours with the Tennessee Titans -- Vince Young out, Jeff Fisher likely still in -- you want Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt and vice president Steve Underwood as your agents. You want this duo doing your bidding, whatever the stakes. What a sell. What wiles.

Because Reinfeldt and Underwood met with Titans owner Bud Adams this week and convinced Adams to boot Vince Young. The same Young who was like a son to Adams. The same Young who enjoyed Houston roots with his owner, a Texas touch that was unmistakable. The same Young who was Adams' personal selection as his franchise quarterback with the No. 3 pick in the 2006 draft.

The same Young who, when Adams was asked a little more than a month ago if the quarterback would be back for the 2011 Titans season, answered: "Oh, God yes!''

So, this time, Reinfeldt and Underwood persuaded Adams to get over it. Move on. Move Young out. No small feat. Bud Adams turned 88 years old this week. He has been around football longer than most people currently associated with the Titans have been alive. You know how hard it is to teach such a seasoned NFL owner a new trick?

Remember, this is an owner who flipped not one but two birds toward the Buffalo sideline during his team's 41-17 victory over the Bills in Nashville in 2009. Adams has a streak of stubbornness in him, a dash of rebel that could make even Young blush.

But Adams eventually saw it, bought it, delivered on the advice of Reinfeldt and Underwood and, yes, Fisher.

And Vince Young deserved it.
