Mark Whipple Reportedly Close to Becoming UConn's Next Coach

UConn Mark WhippleConnecticut is close to filling its head coaching vacancy with former Miami offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

UConn has been searching for a coach since Randy Edsall left for the opening at Maryland in the aftermath of UConn's 48-20 loss to Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.

UConn and Whipple are in the final stages of negotiations, according to a UConn athletic department official who spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to reveal the information. The source said no announcement would come before Thursday.

Most recently, Whipple spent two seasons in Coral Gables, Fla. as offensive coordinator, but left Miami when head coach Randy Shannon was fired after this season. Whipple has had success as a head coach, having led Division I-AA Massachusetts to a national championship in 1998.
