ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- New Broncos coach John Fox announced the hiring Monday of eight assistants, including incumbent offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.McCoy has been with the Broncos the past two years and took over play-calling duties for the final month of the season after the firing Dec. 6 of Josh McDaniels as Denver's coach. He also was well known to Fox, having worked under the former Carolina coach for seven seasons as his quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. Retaining McCoy also allowed the Broncos to maintain some continuity in the coaching of quarterback Tim Tebow, who started the last three games of the season as a rookie.
Fox has not yet named his defensive coordinator. Jim Mora and Sean McDermott, who was fired earlier this week by the Philadelphia Eagles, are rumored to be the top candidates for the job.
Others retained from the previous staff include running backs coach Eric Studesville, who went 1-3 as the Broncos interim head coach after the dismissal of McDaniels. Offensive assistant Brian Callahan, tight ends coach Clancy Barone, defensive line coach Wayne Nunnely and defensive assistant Jay Rodgers also were brought back by Fox.
