His three assist performance in the Kings victory over Columbus was only the second biggest piece of news involving Los Angeles defenseman Jack Johnson on Saturday. Along with helping his team snap a five-game losing streak with a 6-4 win, the 23-year-old rearguard also signed a brand new seven-year contract extension worth $30.5 million that will keep him in Los Angeles through the 2017-18 season.Johnson, who has recorded four goals and 27 assists this season, would have been eligible for restricted free agency this summer had a new deal not been worked out.
The Kings originally acquired him back in 2006 in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes that saw defenseman Tim Gleason and center Eric Belanger go the other way. So far in his career, Johnson has 21 goals to go with 68 assists in 241 games, while he's also become one of the Kings' go-to defenseman.
