Major League Notebook: September 29

Filed under:

Here is what's happening around baseball on Wednesday Sept. 29, 2010:

o. Jason Varitek was emotional Tuesday night after the Red Sox were officially eliminated from the playoff chase as he contemplated what likely will be his final few days with the team.

"It's there," he told reporters. "That's obvious. I mean, I try not to think about it and I hope you guys don't ask me too much about it over the weekend. But it's there. Definitely, it's there."

Varitek has played in 1,477 games for Boston but has started only three times since coming off the disabled list Sept. 6.

o. Kevin Millwood is 3-16 with a 5.29 ERA heading into his final start of the season Wednesday night at Tampa Bay, but the 35-year-old says he isn't ready to hang it up after this year.

"It's not a situation going into the offseason where I feel like I need to get a big contract or make a ton of money," Millwood told the Baltimore Sun. "It's just a situation where I definitely want to play. My biggest (thing) is just wanting to go to a contending team."

o. The Rockies have shut down Jeff Francis for the season, giving Esmil Rogers his scheduled start in Sunday's season finale. Francis finishes at 4-6 with a 4.93 ERA in a season that saw him serve two stints on the disabled list.
