Let's fast forward to 2011: because of slumping sales, Dos Equis announces it has dumped its "The Most Interesting Man in the World" advertisement campaign. Instead Dos Equis has hired a new spokesman to promote the Mexican beer.
The new ad campaign features LSU coach Les Miles and is entitled, appropriately enough, "The Most Luckiest Man in the World." Miles is chosen by Dos Equis after Miles' Tigers win the 2010 BCS title.
Remarkably, the Tigers somehow go 14-0 in 2010 despite being out-gained in nearly every game. The Tigers' opponents also did their part. LSU won in every way imaginable, including when the opponent was penalized for having too many men on the field (Tennessee), dropped a late touchdown pass (North Carolina) or missed a last-second field goal (Alabama).
The new Dos Equis commercials, featuring a few LSU highlights, close with Miles tugging on his hat, squinting into the camera and saying: "Stay lucky, my friends."
Lucky, schmucky, this is a test of skill. Did I mention the back-to-back profitable weeks? A reminder: before the season, I was staked an imaginary $5,000 bankroll. Each pick is for $50, except for the $100 best bet (on a red-hot 2-week winning streak!). Point spreads from Wednesday's USA Today.
